Sexually Transmitted Diseases Cause Dry Skin

Sexually Transmitted Diseases Cause Dry Skin: A few common symptoms are enough to identify many of the most common STDs. Herpes can cause genital warts, bumps, and swellings.

Sometimes, STDs can cause subtler and less well-known symptoms. Dry skin is one of these symptoms that are often overlooked. Dry skin could be a sign you may have an STD.

STI is the term for sexually transmitted infections (STD). However, they are often used interchangeably. STIs can lead to STDs. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) , for example, is an STI unless it causes genital warts, or cervical cancer which are STDs.

This article will focus on dry skin caused by STDs. We will also discuss some of the most important STIs and how they relate to dry skin.

STDs that can cause dry skin

Dry skin can be a sign of many conditions, including allergies and psoriasis. A dry patch on the skin is not necessarily an indication that you have an STD. However, if you experience other symptoms, you should make an appointment with your healthcare provider to get a complete STD screening.

A herpes virus (HSV), infection can cause herpes. There are two types of HSV. Each can cause warts or lesions along the genitals or mouth. They can also cause:

  • Burning
  • Itching skin
  • Dry skin
  • Rashes

People with herpes are more likely to develop eczema. If not treated, this is a serious skin infection that can lead to death.

Itching, burning, and tingling are some of the symptoms. It is most common in the neck and on the head. However, it can also occur anywhere. It is also more likely to occur between 5 and 12 days after contact from someone with HSV.

Syphilis can be caused by the bacterium Traponema pallidum. It is common to get dry, scaly rashes in the secondary stage of the infection. This happens between 3 and 6 weeks after you have contracted the infection. They are more common on your palms or soles of the feet and rarely itches.

People in the second stage of infection can experience dry skin and fever.

Genital warts

The STD caused by HPV is genital warts . HPV can also cause itchy, dry skin. Itchy skin around warts and the warts can also be caused by the virus. The infection could also cause other skin problems.

AIDS can be a STD that you may get if you have HIV. HIV can cause damage to the immune system and make it more vulnerable over time. The virus can make the symptoms worse. Additional symptoms can develop from an HIV infection or AIDS as the immune system becomes weaker. One of these symptoms is dry skin or rash.

What causes dry skin on the penis?

Dry skin on the penis can be alarming. However, in most cases it is not a sign that you have a serious medical condition. Dry skin on your penis is not a sign of genital herpes or genital warts.

Dry skin around your penis can cause dryness.

  • After swimming or bathing, tighten your skin
  • Itching, flaking or peeling of the skin
  • Redness on the skin
  • A rash on the skin
  • Skin cracks or fine lines
  • Deep cracks in the skin may cause bleeding

7 causes

These are seven possible reasons for dry skin on your penis.

1. Drying soaps

The skin on your penis may become dry if you use a harsh cleanser or soap. Use only water to wash your penis. Use a mild soap or baby shampoo if you prefer to wash your penis with water. You might also consider switching to hypoallergenic laundry detergent or fabric softener.

2. Allergy

You may develop dry skin on your penis if you are allergic to latex, perfume, spermicide, or personal deodorant. A latex condom may cause a red, itchy rash or swelling in the penis. You may also experience the following symptoms:

  • Sneezing
  • Wheezing
  • A runny nose
  • Watery eyes

Condoms that do not contain spermicide should be used.

Find latex-free condoms.

3. Dry masturbation and sex

Dry skin can result from a lack of lubrication in prolonged sexual activity such as masturbation and intercourse. A lubricant is a substance that makes sex more enjoyable and helps you avoid dry skin.

There are three types of lubricants:

  • water-based
  • oil-based
  • silicone-based

Avoid using parabens and glycerin in your lubricant. The least likely to cause irritation are water-based lubricants.

4. Wear tight clothing or chafing

Tight clothes that are worn constantly around the genital region can rub against the skin and cause dryness. A buildup of moisture underneath your foreskin can lead to an increase in the risk of infection and can even be a breeding ground.

Wear supportive, soft cotton underwear and loose, light-weight, breathable clothing.

5. Infection with yeast

An yeast infection could lead to:

  • Dryness and peeling skin
  • A rash
  • White patches on the skin
  • The penis head may experience swelling or irritation.
  • A thick, unevenly discharged area under the foreskin

Apply an over-the counter antifungal cream according to the manufacturer’s instructions. You should apply the ointment directly to the penis. If you are not circumcised, the cream can be applied under the skin. It can take up to 10 working days for the infection to completely heal.

Ask your doctor for advice if your symptoms persist or worsen.

6. Eczema

There are many types of eczema that can affect the skin on your penis.

  • Atopic eczema
  • Contact eczema

Eczema can cause dry skin and itching.

Ask your doctor to refer to a dermatologist if you have not been diagnosed with eczema.

A low-strength, topical corticosteroid is the first line treatment for eczema. Penis skin is more sensitive and thinner than other areas of the body. Follow your doctor’s advice and carefully apply medication.

7. Psoriasis

Inverse psoriasis is the most common type. Initial symptoms include red, dry patches on the skin. Small red spots may appear on your penis shaft or glans.

A low-strength, topical corticosteroid may be prescribed by your doctor. UV light therapy may also be recommended if topical corticosteroids fail to treat psoriasis of the penis.

Home remedies

To allow healing time, you should abstain for 24 hours from any sexual activity before treating dry skin on your penis. This includes masturbation. Drink plenty of water to hydrate your body.

Use products that are gentle on sensitive skin when you shower or bathe. Avoid using soap on your genitals and clean them with warm water. To remove any soap residues, wash your hands well.

Use a moisturizing penis lotion after you have finished showering or bathing. It is important to use a cream that specifically targets the skin of the penis. Regular body and hand lotions can contain chemicals that could trigger allergic reactions. You should look for one with Shea butter and Vitamin E to lock in moisture and prevent drying.

Sex and the penis should be dried

You should stop having sexual contact until you have cleared the yeast infection. Yeast infections can spread to other people.

If you don’t have a yeast infection, it is safe to have sex with dry skin on your penis. However, it can be painful.

Looking for help

Your doctor should be consulted if your skin isn’t improving after home treatment or worsening. Your doctor will examine your genital area to determine if you need treatment for yeast infections or to refer you to a dermatologist who might diagnose eczema and psoriasis.
