“And you won’t always get the hundred-on-hundred-performance. No one has the same level of performance. Teachers are under tremendous stress,” he asserts.

Here are some reasons for why:

1. Teachers are the foundation of our the lives of students.

The responsibility of shaping a person’s individual’s life, as well as their ideas and opinions to a great degree, can be stress-inducing. It’s a matter of accountability which a teacher will always take seriously.

2. Changes in relationships

Over time, the teacher-student-relationship as well as the parent-teacher relationship has gone through a change. Particularly in times where the number of parents who have helicopters is increasing teachers are under increased pressure to do their top performance. The Covid-19 epidemic that made teaching the virtual world was also a factor on the teacher-student relationship. The culture of working from home has also impacted the wellbeing of teachers.

3. Long working hours

Contrary to what many believe that teachers have a short work schedule. They get up early and work well beyond school hours most days. This highlights the importance of sleeping properly during and working hours to lessen stress due to less sleeping.

“There’s paperwork, real work, and they also provide guidance and mentoring. There are many aspects that go beyond the teaching of a couple of topics,” says Dr Parikh.

4. Personal life

As with many professionals, teachers too are able to live their lives independently. However, if the role of teacher begins to consume their the time they spend with their families, it could influence their mental wellbeing. The balance between two lives can be a challenge at times.

5. A lack of’me time’

In the bustle of daily life, juggling deadlines, making assignments, coming up with innovative ways to instruct children, caring for family members and keeping up with social obligations Teachers can experience an overwhelming sense of lack of time to themselves. This may result in burning out symptoms and can affect their wellbeing of the mind.

Tips for mental health for teachers

Dr. Parikh offers some basics suggestions for teachers on how to stay at peace, cool and cheerful!

1. Organise yourself

Effective and organized managing your time can reduce stress by a large margin. Make your schedule and lesson plans ahead of time.

2. Do your best to do as little work at home as you can.

Teachers are often left to check their assignments and papers at homework, but this is best avoided as much as it is feasible. “Even if a teacher carry work home, there should be a time window within which she should wrap it up,” Dr. Parikh.

3. Do not be critical about yourself too much.

Teachers are often prone to seeking to push the boundaries as they continue to learn and upgrade in order to remain relevant to evolving technologies, times and ways of teaching. But being too self-critical will result in more stress on teachers’ mental health.

4. Maintain positive relationships at work and at home.

It always works. A cheerful and happy atmosphere filled with happy people will aid in reducing stress. Talk to people, talk about your worries and don’t be afraid to seek assistance.

In addition, investing in your friendships with your family and friends will go to get the emotional support that you require to get through a job like teaching.

5. A healthy lifestyle

A healthy lifestylethat includes eating a balanced diet and at bare minimum exercise , and a relaxing practice like meditation could play a crucial role in improving the mental well-being of teachers.
